Reproductive Services for Bitches

Testing
We use the most effective hormone assay methods and
state-of-art equipment to determine a bitch's
ovulation cycle and the best time for breeding. All
testing is performed on-site, and progesterone test
results are usually available within 2 hours.
Brucellosis results are available within 1 hour.
Obstetrical Services
We offer:
- Artificial insemination of fresh, chilled, and
frozen semen
- Confirmation of pregnancy with physical exam and
ultrasound at 21+ days
- Complete support and testing to maintain the
pregnancy up to delivery
- Radiographs at week 8 to determine the number of
puppies
- Obstetrical assistance for our clients available
upon request 24 hours a day

Artificial Insemination
The insemination method we prefer to use is called
Transcervical Intrauterine Insemination. Unlike traditional
artificial insemination methods, this highly specialized
European technique allows the semen to be deposited directly
into the uterus by use of a specialized cervical pipette.
Although technically challenging, this procedure results in
higher success rates than natural breeding or other methods of
artificial insemination using fresh, chilled, or frozen semen.
Increased litter sizes by 1-2 puppies (2-3 in large breeds)
have been reported.
Along with being the most effective method of artificial
insemination, transcervical insemination is also the safest.
No surgery is required and no anesthesia is usually necessary.
The estrus bitch generally stands willingly for the procedure.
Dr. Dove is one of only a few veterinarians in the United
States trained to perform transcervical insemination. This
technique was developed in Norway and is taught through the
Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, and the Swedish
University of Agricultural Sciences in Uppsala, Sweden.
Infertility
Infertility in canines is common. However, many of the
conditions that result in infertility can be treated. The
procedures and techniques we provide for bitches include:
- Ultrasound evaluation of the reproductive tract
- Induction of fertile estrus cycle in normal and abnormal
bitches superovulation
- Hormone monitoring during pregnancy and hormonal
replacement therapy, if indicated, and nutritional support
of pregnancy
- Treatment of toxic vaginal environments and medical
treatment of uterine abnormalities
For dogs:
- Ultrasound evaluation of testicles and prostate
enhancement of low quality sperm including washing and fluid
replacement
- Effective treatment to increase sperm count
- Medical treatment for testicular and prostatic
abnormalities
- Medication to enhance ejaculation and libido
preservation of canine semen after neutering or death of the
stud dog
Other Services
Complementary Medicine
Among the services offered by our doctors are chiropractic and
acupuncture therapies which, along with certain herbal
remedies, can be used to complement the more traditional
reproductive services.
Genetic Counseling
The basis for any successful breeding program is the
knowledgeable selection of breeding stock. Genetic counseling
can help determine the suitability of an individual. The more
that is known about sire and dam, the better we can predict
the characteristics and the quality of the offspring. We offer
pedigree review and evaluation, DNA testing for heredity, and
the more common genetic diseases, as well as OFA, Penn Hip,
and GDC radiographs. Some breeds have genetically transmitted
diseases and medical conditions that occur even with careful
planning and selection of breeding partners. We provide the
most effective treatments available and will advise you if the
course of the condition warrants intervention by a specialist.
